How To Survive The Feast-ivities The Ketone Way…

My husband and I just celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary!  After a trip to Trader Joes and snacking our way along the Monterey coast, I took stock of what I'd been eating:
  • Thai Lime Almonds
  • Jack, Cheddar & Havarti Cheeses
  • Stuffed Olives
  • Artichoke Dip
  • Spinach Dip
  • Multi Grain, Flax Seed Chips
  • Guacamole
  • Salsa
While I'm sure I wasn't in Ketosis, these choices were fairly low in carbs and they were fun and delicious!

This got me thinking about the upcoming holidays: How to manage them and still maintain? Here's what I think I'll do…
This weekend I will try to get out, weather permitting, and get my body moving doing yard work or other deliberate exercise while loading up on protein and eating very few carbs. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday I plan to eat and live with Ketosis in mind. Then, on Thursday I will load up on turkey and choose moderate portions of the things I like but know are high in carbs.  My favorite is my sister Cindy's homemade stuffing, which thankfully has nuts and sausage along with apples and lots of bread.  I am not going to hold back!  I may skip the roll, the cranberries and the potatoes because they don't  compare to Cindy's stuffing.  As for dessert…if there is anything chocolate I'll go for that, otherwise a small piece of pie with whipped cream instead of ice cream may be in order.  I'll remind myself of how hard I've been working the past week to be disciplined...rather that 'rewarding' myself with eating everything in sight, I will pick and choose my favorites.

My advice to you is to enjoy yourself - these holidays only come once a year…but don't go into them unprepared. Be intentional about what you eat beforehand and what  (and why) you choose when you make your choices.
May these next several weeks be filled wonderful times of guilt free enjoyment with friends and family!

What Masters You?

What Masters You?  Do you tell yourself, "I'm going to be good to myself today ...and not each such and such, or... not do such and such", only to give in later in the day and do or eat the exact thing you vowed not to do? Does your behavior seem compulsive sometimes? Could it be that these 'compulsions' are actually a way of relieving stress or distracting you from another thing altogether?
A dear friend, who struggles with eating well, sent me the article entitled "What Masters You", and link below, which addresses this very subject. Perhaps it will shed some light on why you don't always stick to your diet or fulfill those resolutions you make with yourself.
